It turns out the Internet was not the first major world-changing communications tool to be paid for by the government:

Morse obtained a patent for his telegraph in 1840, and four years later he sent his famous first message _ “What hath God wrought?” _ over a line he’d strung from Washington to Baltimore with $30,000 in federal money.
